'The Kiwi' by Celia Jenkins

'The Kiwi'

It started with a kiwi,
as it sometimes does.
I had bought a few
as a treat, but I was down
to the last one, and the charm had worn off.
A fruit salad, I decided
would be the best thing
to help me dispose of this lingering kiwi.
I gathered an apple,
two oranges, an avocado -
which I did not use but
am saving for breakfast -
a banana, and a fruit we decided
looked most like a peach.
I sliced and diced, peeled away skin
and squeezed a lemon
that stung my hands.
It was done.
It was only when putting the
bowl in the fridge, my utensils
washed and dried, that I saw it.
The kiwi still sat on its shelf.
